For the past month I've been with my girlfriend :iconmkanahashi: We've just been relaxing and enjoying each other's company and it's been great. One day we were watching tv and we both noticed how few good cartoons there are any more so I thought I would vent my frustration and hopefully you all agree with me...
Here in the Philippines there is a show called "Growing Up Creepie" which you can read about here..[link]
What really erks me is the overall look of the show. It seems like studios such as Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network are doing away with creativity and substance for a more "stylized" approach. Now I don't mean that in a good way because the Creepie show is just plain disgusting. It's done in flash and the character designs make me sick. Same goes for The X's on Nick, it's so stylized that you can't watch it without hurting your eyes. It wouldn't be so bad if the show was interesting or clever but it's just dumb. It seems like creators are getting more and more lazy, that or they just don't care anymore. Everything looks the same, it's all super flat with a thick outline I can't stand it anymore. As illustrations they're great but not as animated cartoons. What happened to the good 'ol days? What happened to giving the illusion of weight and depth to our characters? What happened to drawing techniques in general? Yeah this is just my opinion but when I was a kid and turned on the tv I was excited, now I stay away from today's cartoon shows altogether. I think we need to stop experimenting with the future and learn from the past otherwise cartoons are going to become so flat we can't see them anymore.

I'm not entirely sure that it's the networks' fault. I think the flat look is what's being brought to them. With all the pitching I've done, I've not gotten one complaint about the look of anything. The network had their requests of MooBeard (some of which I complied with), but none of them pushed things any closer to the prevailing flat style.

The flat look is becoming popular because the program of choice in making cheap television cartoons is Flash. It's used in many new shows like Foster's and Squirrel Boy. And yeah, it can lead to lazy design and animation. I've given up on watching anything on Cartoon Network and Nick. Instead I watch classic cartoons on YouTube.

I think the most important thing on a cartoon is that children like them. I know this kind of animation is very different from the old ones, but is full of color and has a contagious song and probably children will like that show... (though i hope the content is appropriate for children). I don't think (particularly for this show) that animators got lazy... on the contrary, i think it has a lot of hard work. The idea maybe dumb, but is original and funny.

In fact, i wish i could do something like that ... for this is my crappy attempt of animation ^^; ---> [link] I'd be very grateful if you give me advice on this, i know how much experience you have.... should i study animation or quit that dream as soon as possible ??

Most of the cartoons I don't watch today for me is not because of animations, because many animations to me are filled with different art styles (though I have noticed a recent tread of thick lines and flash), it's the stories.

Very few can captivate me now and I consider them rare gems (Avatar, Danny Phantom, pretty much anything Futurama, etc.), but others just seem to really undermine children. Then again, I already feel cartoons are too durn censored lately...*shrugs*

I know how you feel I miss the old squash and stretch days of the old cartoons, today's cartoons look like cardboard cutouts.

I think a large part of it might have to do with plummeting budgets and a push to simplify and reduce production time and expense. The projects that get greenlit are those that are expected to be easy and cheap to produce.

But I'm just guessing.

The only 2 that I can see that still portrays the common animation techniques are Spongebob and Ed, Edd, and Eddy, at least off the top of my head.

Quitters never make it far in life, but those who never try are even worse off.

Stop complaining and do something about it.

Its a disturbing cartoon that one.

I miss the 90's cartoons like Catdog and Whinnie the pooh...

To be honest I hate todays cartoons.... along with 3D animation.
