Here is the segment as it appears on the show. I thought it looked really good in color. The music and sound FX add A LOT to it as well. As you can see they kept all my original drawings just the way I drew them. All the movements of Itchy and Scratchy I did. The little hop Itchy does was done fully as well, all of it on 1's. I do what's called "straight ahead" animation which means I just go drawing by drawing and not plan anything out. Everyone is different but that's just what's comfortable for me. I need to feel the movements when I'm drawing them rather than plan the whole thing out. I'm going to take this moment to explain a few things..
Timing: probably the single most important aspect to any animation. It's what makes things seem fast or slow. In animation we refer to the number of times a picture is shot under the camera. My style is what's called "on 1's" which means I use a different drawing for each single frame of animation. If you go frame by frame you can see how each frame is different. I also throw in some 2's to help slow things down but most tv animation is done on 2's. The blur's I used can only be done on 1's because it's supposed to give the illusion of super quick movement. I referenced Johny Bravo before because they put blur's on 2's which doesn't give that quickness feel. The idea is that you're supposed to feel the movement rather than see it. The whole idea behind timing is to portray to the viewers how quickly or slowly something is moving or how long to hold a pose for a joke. Such as when Itchy holds up the hose, we need to hold on that long enough for viewers to see it.
Spacing: This refers to the space between drawings. The closer together something is to the next drawing the slower it will be, the farther apart the faster it will be. If you go frame by frame you can see how I used spacing to help the illusion of quick/slow movement. When I wanted to slow something down I put the drawings closer together. Plus when you put lots of drawings next to each other on 1's it makes the character look more alive. A trick I use to quickly get Itchy's hand from one place to another is called a "blur" or "multiple." This is something Chuck Jones perfected in his Looney Tunes days and something I love doing. It's a trick that makes it looks like something is moving really fast plus helps smooth out the action.
Squash & Stretch: Term used to describe the literal squashing and stretching of a form. Sometimes it's not so literal such as a squash could be a character crunching down to the ground. You can see me us it a lot in this segment. It helps to give the characters a certain "rubbery" feel to them. This is the most common and most effective tool to use in animation.
These are some of the more common tools in animation. The basic's if you will. Obviously there are other things like consistency, overshoots, etc. that will really add flair to your work. The more you do it the more you'll able to see these things without even thinking about it so keep practicing!
Hey man, thanks a lot for the tips! Im sure a lot of animators like me would love to be in your shoes!
